Storage

This installation was set up within a vacant shop that had been empty for years. Despite its central location in the city of Leiden, the shop remained closed due to strict health and safety regulations. There were concerns about the state of the building and possible polluted ground. The city council, owner of the building, didn’t want to take the risk of renting it out. An exception was made for the annual arts festival. For the festival we used the space as a storage room for empty cardboard boxes, collected from the shops in the neighborhood. The project provoked discussion about regulations put up by the council in relation to the use of the space and eventually resulted in a renewed use of the building.
